Currently, over hundreds of thousands of DACA recipients across the United States are facing delays in their renewal process. These delays have severe consequences: causing job losses, jeopardizing access to healthcare, and fueling constant fear of deportation. They also significantly impact mental health, education, and ability to travel, creating a multi-faceted crisis demanding immediate action. This is an unjust situation demanding immediate action.
Our goals now are to urge the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to take immediate steps to address this crisis. We demand:
1. Immediate Clearance of Backlogs:
USCIS must prioritize processing and clearing the current backlog of DACA renewal applications. This will bring much-needed relief to thousands and prevent further hardship caused by administrative delays.
2. Automatic Extension Provision:
We propose a policy that automatically extends DACA status recipients who have submitted a timely renewal application (within the recommended window). This will ensure ongoing legal protection and prevent negative consequences during the processing period.
